A CT scan, or computed tomography scan, is a medical imaging technique that combines X-rays with computer processing to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body. During the scan, the X-ray machine rotates around the patient, capturing multiple images from different angles. The Scan
You'll lie on a narrow table that slides through the scanner opening, positioned on your back, side, or stomach depending on the area being examined. You may be asked to hold your breath for 5–10 seconds while images are captured. Scans typically take 30 to 120 minutes.

A radiologist provides a written diagnostic assessment within 24–48 hours, available through the patient portal and shared with your referring physician.
How to Prepare
Preparation depends on which body part is being scanned, and our team will provide specific guidance when you schedule. Some exams require contrast: an oral contrast taken about 90 minutes before the exam, or an IV contrast to better visualize blood vessels and organs. Let us know about any allergies to contrast, kidney problems, or if you are pregnant before your appointment. If you wear a continuous glucose monitor or insulin pump, plan to remove it beforehand, as the CT scanner can damage the sensor or produce inaccurate readings.

Is CT scan radiation safe?
CT scans use x-ray radiation, but the risk is minimal. We use the lowest appropriate dose of radiation possible to provide an accurate diagnostic assessment, and the clinical benefits outweigh the small radiation exposure.
What is CT contrast?
Contrast is a non-ionic substance that makes abnormalities, blood vessels, and tissue visible with greater clarity. It’s given either orally or through an IV, and you may feel brief warmth during an IV injection.
Can I breastfeed after a contrast CT scan?
Yes. Breastfeeding mothers can continue nursing after a contrast CT scan. If you’d prefer to pause out of caution, waiting 12–24 hours after contrast is more than sufficient — there’s no need to stop beyond that.
Do I need to remove my glucose monitor?
Yes. Patients wearing a continuous glucose monitor (such as Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre) or an insulin pump should remove it before a CT scan, since the scanner can damage the sensor or cause inaccurate readings afterward.
